The team of dedicated students: Hussein Shaker, Ali Amin, Yara Diaa
This website was established for our media campaign project. The class is Introduction to Mass Communication taught at the American University in Cairo. The reason our group decided to pursue this topic is because not many people are aware that social media addiction is an actual issue that needs to be addressed. In class we mostly talked about the good side of social media staying connected and informed. We mentioned some of the downsides like misinformation, and manipulation but only briefly focused on the human element by calculating out media consumption time which was quite eye opening to many students in the class.Another reason we decided on this topic is because our group was tired of talking to people’s foreheads while they are endlessly typing away on their phones but who can blame them? In this modern day and age being connected all the time is the essence of modern society and is the norm. The online presence is modern day narcissism making ourselves in the image we believe is perfect feeding our hungry ego.
What you will see on this WEBSITE PART Part of our assignment included to make a video and an e-magazine which are on the website. In our video we portray three different types of addicts first being the multiple device addict checking different social media networks at the same time. The second type of addict is called a griever who consider wifi as a human right and get emotional when they don’t have what they want. Out last type of addict is the common phone addict, we just simulate a real world situation that happens all the time we named it “the no hope conversation” this occurs commonly when a group of friends are on their phones, attempt to have a conversation then go right back to their phones.
Also on the website we put together an e-magazine by researching various sources. Ali Amin wrote an article briefly summing up what is the definition of media addiction, Hussein Shaker’s articles focuses on a hobby turned into addiction and the mental and physical effects on an individual. Lastly Yara Diaa takes on the topic on “getting help” for a very real issue through small steps because going cold turkey is almost impossible in this modern age , so the steps suggest ways to lessen the time spent on social media lower exponentially.
Hussein Shaker did the podcast as a one man show. He takes the name Maxwell Spencer and interviewed a media addict called Hoosane who is attached to his phone “like his own flesh and blood”. This Podcast is not serious anyway but may bring a smile to your face.
The last page “Helpful resources” for future researchers who are focused on the same topic, people who are curious, and for people who want to change their harmful habit, there are websites that give the steps to a gradual change in lifestyle online.
